A Climate Plan that Meets our Needs and is Fiscally Attainable

The Ontario Greens’ climate plan is the most comprehensive of all the parties—and the result of exhaustive consultation with scientists, economists and other jurisdictions across the globe. We went to great lengths to make sure this plan offers the change Ontario needs within the timeline we have left—while being financially attainable.

As a result, the details of how we plan to crush carbon pollution, restore water and nature, and create policies that allow us to succeed together (leaving no one behind) are far too lengthy to include here (but, rest assured, you can find them here).

To give you an idea of what it entails, however, here’s the too-long-didn’t-read (TLDR) version:

$65 billion

The total cost of our climate scheme. Combined with other measures, the plan will be cost-neutral by 2026.

50%

The amount our plan will cut Ontario’s GHG emissions by 2030.

2045

The year Ontario will become Net Zero under our plan.

½

The amount we will reduce the use of fossil fuels in buildings by 2030. By 2040, 40% of homes and workplaces will be retrofitted.

$12.1 billion

Incentives to encourage both individuals and transit operators to invest in electric vehicles.

$8 billion

The size of Ontario’s new Climate Adaptation Fund would help municipalities invest in making environmentally conscious infrastructure.

$6 billion

A “climate bonus” to increase wages and social support for people most affected by the transition to a greener economy.

Where will the money come from?

$20 billion

Federal government

$16 billion

Redirected energy subsidies

$8.7 billion

Parking fees

$5.8 billion

Saved by easing traffic congestion

$6 billion

Generated from a 3% climate surcharge tax on Ontario’s highest-earning 10%.

If Ontario wants to attract jobs and investment in the trillion-dollar clean economy, we need to show that we’re a province that takes climate change seriously. Learn more about the Climate Economy and the Ontario Green’s Climate Plan at https://gpo.ca/platform/new-climate-economy/.
